Ten years of making launches uneventful. NFC payments for Barclays, Preqin's website rebuild, ServiceNow Process Mining, and now Canva, where I build the evals behind Canva AI and test features that reach millions of people on day one.

Career shown as a test run: 2015, Barclays bPay, contactless; 2017, Preqin · BMW & MINI · DBS; 2020, Process Mining, QA from zero; 2022, moved to Sydney, wrote Go; 2024, Canva AI evals · Affinity.

Testing AI that gives a different answer every time

Canva AI turns a request in plain words into calls to design tools, sometimes chaining several together. Any model or prompt change can quietly break those choices, and pass/fail tests can't see it.

  • Eval pipelines
  • LLM-as-judge
  • Tool descriptions
  • YAML + GitHub
What I built

An eval pipeline that runs against production with a dedicated test account. It tests the agent at three levels of tool use, each as a single message and as a longer conversation. An LLM judge scores the results, and browser evals check the whole experience end to end.

Around it, I built the pieces that make it useful day to day. Every failure is matched against bugs already reported, so only new problems reach triage. I tuned the description of every tool so the agent knows what each one does and when to call it. The test cases live as YAML in GitHub, so product managers add prompts themselves and every run leaves a report behind. Fixing what the evals caught lifted pass rates by 20–30%.

For Canva AI’s big March release, I also helped design the system that gathered the flood of bug reports from every channel, sorted them by area and sent each one to the right team.

affinity.spec · Affinity · Canva · 2025launched

Getting Affinity's website ready for the day it went free

Canva was making Affinity free, and one announcement would send a wave of people to the website at the same moment. There was a week to prove it would hold.

  • k6
  • JMeter
  • AWS
  • Cloudflare
What I built

A load-testing suite in k6, from scratch. I recorded the real journey from landing page to download and replayed it from load generators in several AWS regions to push the global CDN. I found a way through Cloudflare and SSO on a site that wasn’t public yet, modelled a realistic traffic mix, and kept caching on so the results reflected real life. The team went into launch day with a scaling plan built on measured baselines.

Bringing Brand Kits to every Canva user

Brand Kits keep fonts, colours and logos consistent across designs. Opening them up from teams to every individual meant they had to work for millions of people, on every device and in every language, from day one.

  • Test strategy
  • TypeScript
  • iOS / Android
  • a11y
What I built

The quality plan for Personal Brand Kit, from the first design review to release readiness. It covered iOS, Android and tablets on slow networks, desktop, offline mode, Canva China, right-to-left languages and accessibility. I ran the test parties and wrote integration tests for the hardest scenarios myself, and it launched at Canva Create.

process-mining.spec · Process Mining · ServiceNow · 2020–22shipped

Building QA from zero for a brand-new ServiceNow product

ServiceNow's R&D and NowX teams were building Process Mining, a new product that shows how work really flows through a business. There was no QA practice behind it.

  • UI + API automation
  • Gremlin
  • Release mgmt
What I built

The QA practice itself. As the first QA engineer on the product, I wrote the test strategy with the QA director from a blank page, then built the UI and API test suites on ServiceNow’s in-house automation tools. I took on release management and became a Gremlin-certified chaos engineer along the way. Process Mining is part of the ServiceNow platform today.

preqin.spec · Preqin · ThoughtWorks · 2017–20shipped

Test architecture for Preqin's rebuilt website

Preqin's data on alternative assets is used by investors around the world. ThoughtWorks rebuilt their entire website, and testing had to keep pace with a large team shipping fast.

  • Cypress
  • Supertest
  • Jest
  • JMeter
What I built

The test architecture, in three layers: UI tests in Cypress, API tests in Supertest and Jest, and performance tests in JMeter. I designed how they fit together and ran bug triage with the client to decide what to fix first.

bpay.spec · Barclays UK · Cognizant · 2015–17shipped

Paying with a tap, before Apple Pay was in every pocket

With bPay, Barclays customers paid by tapping a wristband, a sticker or even a jacket on a card reader, years before paying without a card was normal.

  • NFC
  • POS terminals
  • Rest Assured
  • SeeTest
What I built

End-to-end testing for bPay: an API automation suite in Rest Assured with full regression on every release, and the point-of-sale terminal setup we used to run real contactless payments with every kind of wearable. On Barclays’ UK mobile banking app, I helped build a framework that automated tests on iOS and Android. This is where I taught myself automation.

ThoughtWorksBMW Group

BMW and MINI

Rebuilt the website once and white-labelled it for both brands. I led QA for releases, with UI automation and visual regression running across browsers.

ThoughtWorksBanking

DBS Bank

Rebuilt DBS's UI test framework in Cypress and added performance testing with JMeter.

ThoughtWorksData

Questback

A platform that turns team surveys and data from many other systems into insights. I set up daily security scans of its Docker images and built tools that checked the data arriving from S3 buckets and APIs.

Canva Business, and apps for real estate

Tested the onboarding and setup flows for the Canva Business launch, which rolled out cleanly even with requirements changing up to launch day. Since then I've been the QA on business-specific apps built for real estate users.
